Casting Your Own Lead Jigs

Making your own lead jigs and other lead lures is a simple process, but as you can see you do require a few extra tools. Just follow the steps listed below to make your own lead jigs. You will follow the same basic steps to mold a large variety of different lures such as spinnerbaits, buzz baits, jigging spoons, sinkers and other lead lures.

Necessary Equipment: Lead, melting
equipment (melting pot and ladle) and
Do-It mold. Lead melts at 620°F so you require
a reliable source of heat.

Step 1: Place hooks or other components in mold
cavity.

Step 2: Carefully pour lead into mold cavities. Click to enlarge photo.
Step 3: The lead will cool quickly. Carefully remove jig
heads from mold. Caution: They are still hot!

Step 4: Remove spruce from the jigs with a pair of
gate shears.

Step 5: Paint lures as desired with vinyl jig paint or
powder paint.

Step 6: (Optional) Tying bucktail using
tying vise and bobbin.
